Welcome to Poznań

On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee we are very pleased to invite you to participate in the jubilee 10th Meeting of the EURO Working Group on Transportation (EWGT): "Advances in Modeling, Optimization and Management of Transportation Processes and Systems - Theory and Practice" to be held in Poznań, Poland, on September 13-16, 2005. This festive, important event will be the 10th successive scientific meeting of transportation and operations research specialists from all over Europe and other continents. It requires, thus, special attention and celebration. During our conference we would like to recall our best memories from previous EWGT meetings (from 1st Meeting in Landshut, Germany, to 9th Meeting in Bari, Italy) and define the guidelines for future development of the EWGT. This event will be hosted by Poznan University of Technology and officially sponsored by EURO Working Group on Transportation.

To enhance the level of our professional discussion and introduce new ideas into transportation research we propose a joint organization of the EWGT Meeting with other prominent scientific event, i.e. 16th Mini-EURO Conference: "Artificial Intelligence in Transportation". We hope that joint organization of these events will give us an exceptional opportunity to discuss a wide spectrum of transportation and operation research problems. We are confident that new ideas will be born on the edge of various disciplines. This conference is officially supported by The Association of European Operational Research Societies (EURO) and Polish Operational and System Research Society (POSRS).

We invite you to Poznań, the capital city of Wielkopolska (Great Poland), one of the oldest and largest city in Poland. Poznań is located in the western part of Poland, on the Warta River. It is a city of rich historical backgrounds with unique and precious monuments. The city was founded in the 9th century and the city rights were given in 1253. One may visit in Poznań the Gothic Cathedral on the Ostrów Tumski island with its beautiful Golden Chapel and the tombs of the first Polish rulers. Another place of historical interest is the Old Market Square with the pearl of Renaissance architecture - the City Hall. The Poznań's tradition is the appearance of two little goats on the City Hall's tower every noon. One of the most valuable monuments of sacral architecture in Poznań is the Baroque Parish Church.

Poznań is also an important cultural center, famous of its Opera and Philharmonic Houses. Excellent concerts and musical performances are given by the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra directed by Agnieszka Duczmal as well as the Poznań Boy's Choir and Boy's and Men's Choir (Poznań Nightingales), directed by Jacek Sykulski and Stefan Stuligrosz, respectively. Poznań is world wide known for its Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition, the International Jazz Festival "Jazz Fair", the Folk Blues Fair, the Polish Dance Theater, National Art Gallery, Europe's only Museum of Musical Instruments and open-air International Theater Festival "Malta". You can also enjoy in Poznań two zoos, a botanic garden, a palm house and exceptional recreation facilities on the Malta Lake.

We hope that Poznań will touch your heart with its charming atmosphere and the hospitality of Polish people. We believe that you will enjoy a wide variety of cozy cafés and traditional Polish restaurants scattered throughout the city. We will also offer you visits to Polish castles and palaces in the surroundings of Poznań, where you will be able to experience traditional Polish folk dances, horse riding and many other sights. We are confident that our conference will be an excellent opportunity for discussion among specialists in transportation and operations research. Academics and practitioners from all over the World are invited to exchange ideas and dispute on a wide range of current transportation and artificial intelligence problems.

We look forward to welcoming you in Poznań in September 2005.
